What do SPF, DKIM, and DMARC actually do?

SPF lists which servers may send email for your domain. DKIM cryptographically signs each message so receivers can verify it wasn’t forged. DMARC ties the two together and tells receivers what to do with mail that fails — and publishes reports so you can see abuse. Gmail and Yahoo now effectively require all three for anyone sending in volume.

Why did my DKIM check fail when my provider says it’s configured?

DKIM records live under a selector (e.g. google._domainkey.yourdomain.com) and selectors are provider-specific. This tool tries the most common ones; if your provider uses a custom selector we can’t guess it. Treat a DKIM miss as "verify in your provider’s console", not as a confirmed failure.

What DMARC policy should I use?

Start with p=none plus a rua reporting address — it changes nothing but shows you what would fail. After a couple of clean weeks, move to p=quarantine. p=reject is the end state once you’re confident every legitimate sender is authenticated.

Does passing these checks guarantee inbox placement?

No — authentication is the entry ticket, not the whole game. Placement also depends on volume ramp-up, bounce and complaint rates, list quality, and content.
